Y’all know I love me a good, clean house. Sometimes, I can have a completely awful day and take it out on a good cleaning. I know, I’m weird. But let’s talk about what’s not weird –
Homemade cleaning products.
They’re cool right? Yea, but only if you know how to make your own. Let’s take a look at some popular DIY homemade cleaners that you can make right now (assuming you have some basic products at home).
1. For Your Laundry
If you want to give your laundry an extra little boost, whip out the white powder.
Whoa, whoa now. Not that stuff…
Baking soda!
It helps neutralize pH and just overall makes your laundry fresh AF. Don’t feel bad if you’re just now discovering this; I just learned about it this year. I know, I’m shaking my head, too. I always wondered why people would do it! All you have to do is throw a half cup in your load and let the magic happen.
Want to add an extra, natural boost of scent to your laundry? Add 2-20 drops of essential oils with your baking soda.
2. All-Purpose Cleaning Spray
Did you know vinegar is a great cleaner? It smells terrible, so try this recipe in a spray bottle to create a good smelling cleaner:
- 13 ounces of water
- 1/2 cup of white vinegar
- fresh lemon peel to sit overnight or 15 lemon essential oil drops
- 10 lavender essential oil drops
You can use this to clean your counters, tables, bathroom, whatever. Be warned though, using vinegar and lemon on real granite or marble countertops can eat away at it. Avoid it if you’re unsure and try a different cleaning solution below!
3. All-Purpose Cleaning Spray Without Vinegar
If you’re looking for an easy cleaner that won’t erode your fancy counters, try this recipe that’s safe to use:
- 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol (or vodka!)
- 3 cups of water
- 10 drops of tea tree oil
- add any other non-acidic essential oils you like for scent!

4. One Disinfectant To Rule Them All
As much as we all love to use natural, wholesome, not-going-to-send-me-to-the-hospital cleaners, sometimes we have to call in the big guns.
Bleach.
When your kid is sick with a virus like Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease or catches RSV from daycare, it’s important to at least do a once over with a disinfectant with bleach to kill the virus. Most instances, bleach is the only thing that will actually kill the virus. You can always clean the area again with a natural product afterwards. This way, you get the disinfectant properties as well as a top layer of ‘non toxic’ goodness.
A simple yet effective recipe for a disinfectant spray:
- 10 parts water
- 1 part bleach
Yep, that’s it! The key is to not use a lot of bleach. Less is more in this case. And of course, avoid any fabrics you don’t want discolored in case it interacts with the bleach!

5. Glass and Window Cleaner
Get yourself a streak-free shine without a bottle of the blue stuff. Here’s what you need:
- 1/2 cup water (mixes well when it’s hot)
- 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol (again, or some cheap vodka)
- 3 table spoons of starch
Mix it all up in a bowl, and use it with a soft or microfiber towel to clean! You can use it on windows, glass tables, mirrors, pretty much anything you want to be streak free. Bottle it up and take it to your car! Clean those windows and mirrors with ease.
Bonus: The Power Of Baking Soda
I can’t let you finish reading this post without throwing in a few more uses for baking soda. It’s really a beast when it comes to cleaning. Here are some ways you can use baking soda to get an extra clean around the house:
- Freshen up fabric toys by sprinkling it all over the toy, let it sit a while, then dust or vacuum it off.
- Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet before you vacuum it!
- Throw some down the garbage disposal to eliminate odors and clean the disposal
- Put 1/4 cup of baking soda and your fave essential oil blends in a coffee filter. Tie it up with a rubber band and throw in your drawer or closet for an air freshener!
- Use baking soda and water to create a ‘mud’ type of texture and use it to clean irons
- Put an open box of baking soda in your fridge to keep it smelling fresh
